CHARLES IX (1550–1574). L.S., Fontainebleau, 28 [July] 1571, to Raymond de Fourquevaulx, Ambassador to Spain; countersigned by the Royal Secretary Nicolas de Neufville de Villeroy; 1 folio page, address on the reverse. He has learnt of the death of ‘Francesque Lasse’ [Don Francisco Lasso], Grand Master ‘of the household of the Emperor, my father-in-law ’ [Maximilian II]: ‘both because of the affection I felt for the late Grand Master and for the kindness he showed me in bestowing upon me this title on behalf of the Emperor, my on the basis of the baptismal records, and for the pity I feel for his widow and several young children left in need and poverty”, due to the debts incurred by Lasso. Charles IX went on to write ‘to the Catholic King, my good brother’ [Philip II] to implore him, in remembrance of ‘the good services which the late Lasso rendered to his forefathers, to him, and generally to all those of his house’, to grant a reward to the widow and children, and to bestow upon Don Diego Lasso, his son, ‘the commandery of Guadalcaval’, which had been granted to his father shortly before his death.
