Charles de GAULLE (1890–1970). P.S., 17 December 1952; half-page in-4, typewritten, on his letterhead ‘Le Général de Gaulle’. Appointment of Miss Yvonne Salmon as ‘National Councillor of the Rassemblement du peuple français’ [Yvonne Salmon (1885–1965) was one of the first to respond to the call of 18 June. As head of the Alliance Française in London from 1920 to 1945, a translator of Thomas Hardy and a senior lecturer at the University of Reading, she worked to support the Free French through lectures, first in England and then in Algiers, where she followed the General. In 1943, she published one of the first biographical works on General de Gaulle]… With a typewritten cover letter from Olivier Guichard, Deputy Chief of Staff to General de Gaulle. Enclosed are two letters (drafts, the second signed) from Yvonne SALMON to General de Gaulle. – London, 17 May 1943 (on Alliance Française letterhead), concerning her efforts to raise awareness amongst Canadian troops in London – particularly French-Canadians – of France’s plight…– Paris, 28 August 1945. On her return from a trip to England, she recounts how vividly De Gaulle was remembered by the workers at a tank factory… : “The ordinary people of England are very fond of you; they admire your ideas, your perseverance and have confidence in you”… – Plus a letter from Claude Mauriac, the General’s Private Secretary, 20 September 1945, in reply to the letter above.
