THE WAR OF 1870. Manuscript, *The German People’s War*; 69 folio pages in 4 quires. The War of 1870 as seen from the Prussian perspective, from 3 August to 17 September 1870, including a detailed account of the Battle of Saarbrücken. Marginal notes referring to instalments (3rd instalment, and 7th to 9th) suggest that this is the fragmentary manuscript of a translation for a periodical of a German text, which recounts in detail the departures, the fighting, the alerts, the wounded, the marches, the military engagements and the weather, along with commentary on the course of the conflict and political debates. The first notebook begins in Lebach on 3 August and ends in Courcelles-Chaussy on 14 August; the second notebook begins in Ottweiter on 5 August (the end is missing); the third notebook (7th–8th entries) covers the period from 29 August in Grandpré to 31 August in Beaumont; the fourth notebook covers the period from 9 September in Reims to 17 September outside Paris.
