Friedrich Xavier, Prince of Hohenzollern-Hechingen (1757–1844), Austrian general. Autograph letter, Kraków, 9 June 1807, to Count Bellegarde; 3 pages, in-4; in French. An interesting letter on the diplomatic negotiations on the eve of the Battle of Friedland. The Count suspects ‘that Prussia is negotiating in secret’, but, if this information comes ‘only from the French side’, it must be treated with caution: ‘According to my information, the King is firmly resolved not to make any separate peace, and at this very moment there are, in Vienna, envoys sent jointly by the Emperor of Russia and the King. It is in the French interest to sow mistrust amongst the cabinets in order to prevent any alliances dangerous to France, and I beg you to consider, my dear Count, that to harbour such doubts would be, without meaning to, to serve those who, at heart, remain our enemies.
