LOUIS XII (1462–1515) King of France. P.S., Montils-lès-Tours, 17 January 1493 [1494]; oblong folio-sized vellum, fragment of a red wax equestrian seal bearing a coat of arms in countersign. A fine and interesting document relating to the aftermath of the ‘Mad War’, during which the future King of France, then Duke of Orléans, Milan and Valois, had opposed the Regent Jeanne de Beaujeu, daughter of Louis XI. Payment order issued at the request of the children of the late Jean Boudet, Comptroller-General of Finances, for sums paid in his name and in that of the Duke of Bourbon (Jean II, 1456–1488)... ‘at the time when we were in Brittany with our late most dear Lord and cousin, the Duke—may God rest his soul—which was in the year one thousand four hundred and eighty-six, eighty-seven and eighty-eight, the said late Jehan Boudet was commissioned by us and entrusted with the task of making payments from our treasury, silver store and chamber for the funds and other expenses and charges which it was then necessary for us to incur in the said country of Brittany”… These payments were made to Monsieur de Lestrange, to Jehan de Vaulx and to Bertrand Prévost, treasurer to the Count of Dunois...
