Description
Slobodan MITROV (1919–1942), a Yugoslav resistance fighter and activist during the Spanish Civil War. L.S., Gurs Camp, 27 July 1939, to his friend Drago; 1 typewritten page, quarto; in Serbian. Following the defeat of the Republican side in Spain, Mitrov was interned, along with his fellow fighters, at the French camp of Gurs in the Pyrenees. He attempts to send his friend the information he has requested ‘regarding student participation in the Spanish Civil War’. He has not received the two letters that his correspondent claims to have sent him, but will endeavour to forward all the necessary data and information to him as soon as possible: “We have already tried to get in touch with you once by sending you a manifesto in French read out by 200 international students from all over the world. […] Here at the camp, I am involved in cultural and educational work […]. We are in contact with one another and with our Spanish fellow students, who have their own organisation (U.F.E.H.)’. But the lack of everything makes the task difficult. In the camp, there is a great deal of interest in the student conference to be held next month in Rancho. He asks to be sent documents about the conference, as well as *La voix des étudiants* (in Spanish or French), and other books… He hopes that they will finally manage to establish a permanent link and sends his regards to his comrade on behalf of all the interned students… At the bottom of the letter, Mirka Kovacevica has added a few handwritten lines.
