[Anne de MONTMORENCY]. Letter addressed to him by ‘Ringane Cokbourn’ [Cockburn], Montreuil, 1 May [1555]; 2 folio pages, with address.
An interesting letter from a captain regarding the siege of Montreuil by his company and that of Senarpont; he learnt from prisoners that the horses have nothing left to eat but ‘reeds and roof thatch’… He then gives news of ‘the Queen of Hungary ’ [Mary of Hungary, governor of the Netherlands] who ‘has committed great atrocities in the city of Antwerp, for some merchants from my country report that, of the twelve leading figures of that city, she had four beheaded and as many had their tongues cut out, and their ears in four pieces’, because they had refused to consent to the tax she was demanding… As for the English, who have been driven out of both the King’s and the Emperor’s camps, they are causing ‘a great deal of harm around Saint-Haumere [Saint-Omer]’…
