Description
Charles de SCHONBERG (1601–1656), Marshal of France. Autograph letter, 14 December [1636], to Cardinal Richelieu; 3 folio pages, addressed with small red wax seals bearing the coat of arms on blue silk backgrounds (traces of burning on one edge, with some line endings missing). He sends the Cardinal two dispatches which King Louis XIII and the Queen Mother have seen: ‘their advice was not to disregard this news, but also not to be alarmed by it’. They order that regiments be stationed or redeployed in Languedoc and the Dauphiné, in the Vivarais, etc. ‘On this matter, I have submitted to the King a matter on which he will not make a decision until he sees you, namely that if these unfavourable reports continue until the end of the year, he must not yet resolve to withdraw the regiments from Picardy, Normandy, and the Chasse.’ It has been reported that ‘His Highness the Prince has summoned the nobility of Berry to inform them of this; he intends to hear something on the King’s behalf; it is also said that he has ordered the members of the clergy […] Their Majesties consider that someone must be sent to the scene to ascertain what is taking place there; we are seeking a pretext for the journey and the right person for this purpose’… He then gives news of the King, who “continues to be somewhat unwell; he is to have an enema this evening, and tomorrow he is to be bled, though I doubt whether, having promised to keep his word, he will do so; and the day after tomorrow he will take medicine. ‘The gentlemen of the Assembly have begun to work diligently today and will, I believe, continue without interruption’… Regarding the address, Schonberg asks that his letter be burnt (which shows slight traces of burning).
