Description
Jacques Boudin, Count of TROMELIN (1771–1842), General. 3 autograph manuscripts, one of which is signed, 1825–1827; 32 folio pages. An interesting collection of texts on Greece and the Ottoman Empire, translated from English by General de Tromelin. [The nephew of the famous admiral, he served as aide-de-camp to Admiral Sidney Smith whilst in exile; he served in the East, notably in the Turkish army, and was imprisoned in 1804 as an accomplice of Cadoudal. He returned to active service in 1809 with the Grande Armée, becoming a colonel in the Croatian regiment (1809) and a general (1813); he served in Saxony, at Leipzig and Waterloo. These working notes, containing numerous corrections, were to form the basis for a major publication the general was preparing on Greece and the Balkans: Observations on the roads leading from the Danube to Constantinople through the Balkans or Mount Hoemus, followed by some reflections on the necessity of intervention by the powers of southern Europe in the affairs of Greece, by Lieutenant-General Count de T., published in 1828. Journey to Mount Athos by Dr Hunt, followed by an extract from a paper by Dr Sibthorp on the quadrupeds and fish of Greece (signed, 6 pp.); Extract from *A Survey of Greece in 1825* by J. Emerson and Count Peicho (4 pp.); Extracts and translation of *A Journey to Albania* by S.C. Hobhouse, in the years 1809 and 1810 (20 pp., and 2 pp. of a table of distances). Enclosed is a signed autograph memorandum, dated 15 March 1821 (8 pp., folio), containing reflections on the organisation of the army during the Restoration and on issues of discipline and the loyalty of soldiers towards their superiors. Plus papers from the estate of the Chevalier de Tromelin (1735–1815), admiral, explorer and governor of Port-Louis: a breakdown of debts owed to the estate, correspondence from the notary regarding these debts (5 letters, 1816), an inventory of Mr de Tromelin’s library…
