Description
Raymond CAUCHETIER (1920–2021) *À bout de souffle*, Jean-Luc Godard. Walking down the Champs-Élysées. Jean Seberg and Jean-Paul Belmondo, Champs-Élysées, Paris, 1959.  Later silver print, printed in 1998, signed in felt-tip pen, with ‘Copyright’ and title stamps on the reverse. Dimensions: 24 x 17.5 cm Raymond Cauchetier recounts: Belmondo and Seberg on the Champs-Élysées… only connoisseurs know that this photograph, which over time has become the emblem of the film, and indeed of the New Wave, is not merely a still from the set. The film sequence depicting the meeting between Jean Seberg and Jean-Paul Belmondo had just been shot at the top of the Champs-Élysées, amidst the crowd, by the cameraman hidden in a Post Office pushchair. But the onlookers had become so numerous that I decided to take the actors right down to the bottom of the avenue, to a spot that was still deserted, to recreate the scene and capture it in a single image. My experience with photo-novels came in handy, as it allowed me to earn a living between film projects. And that is how I staged, quite spontaneously, this photograph, whose fate exceeded anything one could have imagined.
