Description
Raymond CAUCHETIER (1920–2021) *À bout de souffle*, Jean-Luc Godard. The actor Jean-Paul Belmondo, the director Jean-Luc Godard and the producer Georges de Beauregard, in front of the church of Saint-Germain-des-Prés, Paris, 1959. Later silver print, printed in 1998, signed in felt-tip pen, with ‘Copyright’ and title stamps on the reverse. Dimensions: 24 x 17.5 cm (Bleeding and ink marks on the reverse)   “The starting point for Godard’s film was far from glorious. In 1959, producer Georges de Beauregard considered himself ruined following the commercial failures of the films *Ramuntcho* and *Pêcheur d’Islande*. […] Beauregard, however, still had one lifeline: the film subsidy scheme, recently established by Minister André Malraux, which consisted of a loan of around thirty million francs at the time, to encourage the production of new films. The sum was insufficient to produce a standard film, but invaluable in easing the strain on a production’s budget. Beauregard’s masterstroke was to seek out a director capable of making a film whose budget would not exceed the thirty million on offer. Serious candidates were few and far between. It was unthinkable, at the time, to make a film costing less than one hundred million. But Jean-Luc Godard, who happened to be passing by, declared himself entirely willing to direct a film under these conditions. Naturally, Beauregard tried to impose a subject based on Pierre Loti on him, but Godard had the courage to resist. He didn’t have the faintest idea what he was going to do, but that was a minor detail. He consulted his friends Truffaut and Chabrol, and they settled on a recent news story recounting the misadventures of a young gangster being hunted down by the police. A one-page synopsis was drawn up and presented to Beauregard, who accepted it for want of anything better. He did not realise that he had just made the most important decision of his entire life. It was, in fact, the birth of *À bout de souffle*.” Raymond C. in Raymond Cauchetier, *La Nouvelle Vague*, Hugo Image, Paris, 2022, p. 14.
