Raymond Cauchetier recounts:
‘Wednesday 26 April 1961 – 9.00 am – Valmy Footbridge – Charenton-le-Pont: In those days, I was still working with the Rolleiflex that had served me faithfully during the Indochina campaign. To photograph this now-famous scene, as the camera had no motor, I had to wind the hand crank after each shot. I was therefore only able to take one photograph of the finish of each of the four races filmed in succession by François Truffaut. Like sports photographers, I had to choose each time the 1/500th of a second that seemed to me to be the best. ”
