Description
Raymond CAUCHETIER (1920–2021) Jules and Jim, François Truffaut. The Race on the Footbridge. Jules (Henri Serre), Jim (Oskar Werner) and Catherine (Jeanne Moreau), Charenton-le-Pont, 1961. Silver gelatin print, printed in 1998, signed in felt-tip pen, with ‘Copyright’ and title stamps on the reverse. Size: 12.5 x 17.5 cm Raymond Cauchetier recounts: ‘Wednesday 26 April 1961 – 9.00 am – Valmy Footbridge – Charenton-le-Pont: In those days, I was still working with the Rolleiflex that had served me faithfully during the Indochina campaign. To photograph this now-famous scene, I had to turn the camera’s crank after each shot, as it had no motor. I was therefore only able to take one photograph of the finish of each of the four races filmed in succession by François Truffaut. Like sports photographers, I had to choose each time the 1/500th of a second that seemed to me to be the best.” Source: Kaoru and Raymond Cauchetier Collection Bibliography: MOREAU, Jeanne (texts selected and presented by Jean-Claude Bonnet).
