Raymonde Cauchetier recalls:
24 August 1959 – 10.00 am – Champs-Élysées.
“Only experts know that this photograph, which over time has become the emblem of the film, and indeed of the New Wave, is not a set photograph. The scene in the film depicting the meeting between Jean Seberg and Jean-Paul Belmondo had just been shot at the top of the Champs-Élysées, amidst the crowd, by the cameraman hidden in a Post Office pushchair. But there were so many onlookers that I decided to take the actors right to the bottom of the avenue, to a spot that was still deserted, to recreate the scene and capture it in a single image. My experience with photo-novels came in handy, as it allowed me to earn a living between film projects. I could never have imagined that this impromptu direction of the actors would go on to have such an exceptional fate.”
