INDONESIA, Central Java – 20th century A set of sixty-six Wayang Golek puppets, made of polychrome lacquered wood and fabric. Height: 70 cm Wayang Golek is a traditional form of wooden puppet theatre originating in West Java (Indonesia), which depicts episodes from the Indian epics the Ramayana and the Mahabharata.The puppets, representing gods, heroes and demons, are manipulated by a dalang during ceremonies and feature distinctive features that allow each character to be identified. This rare set, comprising nearly eighty figures – including Yudhishthira, Semar and Gatotkaca – is close to the size of a complete troupe. - Expert: PORTIER & Associés
