Aristide Maillol (1861-1944), Leda , bronze sculpture with brown-black patina, monogrammed, founder's stamp (unidentified), 29x14x13 cm Attestation by M. Olivier Lorquin, Paris, 14 April 2026 Provenance: Galerie Vollard, Paris, Collection André Gide, acquired directly from the gallery in March 1905 for Fr. 350 (André Gide's acquisition list), Collection Catherine Gide, then remained in the family to this day. Note: In 1938, André Gide wrote in his diary about a small statuette by Maillol (Leda) that adorned his desk (see photo). This sculpture is an over-moulding authorised by the artist and published by Ambroise Vollard. Related exhibition: Aristide Maillol, Galerie Vollard, Paris, 16-30 June 1902, cat. exp. no. 33, (plaster) André Gide Collection (1869-1951) This sculpture of Leda was acquired directly by André Gide from the gallery of the famous dealer Ambroise Vollard in March 1905. It was to adorn the writer's desk for many years. It was referred to in his diary in 1938 as "a little statuette by Maillol" and can be seen in the film André Gide, Un petit air de famille . This work comes from the same collection that we had the pleasure of presenting for sale in September 2021.
