Edgar Degas (1834-1917) - The Little 14-year-old Dancer
First shown at the sixth Impressionist exhibition in 1881, La Petite Danseuse de quatorze ans is one of Edgar Degas's most emblematic sculptures. The figure represented is the young Marie Van Goethem, a student dancer at the Paris Opera who was fourteen at the time of the work's creation.
The original model, executed in wax between 1875 and 1880, was distinguished by the unprecedented use of real accessories such as a fabric tutu, satin ribbon and hair, contributing to the striking realism of the figure. This profoundly innovative approach provoked strong reactions when it was presented to the public.
No bronze edition was made during the artist's lifetime. The first posthumous castings were made in 1918 by the Hébrard foundry. The present edition, produced by the Guastini foundry, is part of a limited edition authorised by the Comité Degas in a reduced format of 70 cm. It retains the characteristic features of the original model, now in the National Gallery of Art in Washington.
