Albert Marquet (1875-1947) - Landscape of the Danube at Galatz
1933 was a landmark travel year for Marquet. With his wife, Albert Marquet took a slow cruise on the famous Danube from its mouth at Sulina to the port of Galatz. Marcelle Marquet recounts that, during this trip, her husband was always "absorbed by the problem for which he sought a solution all his life: to fix the ephemeral relationships of light and water and, in a point or an immobile line, to imprison life by leaving it its palpitation". Particularly fascinated by Galatz, Albert Marquet took several views of the quays from the boat that the Romanian government had made available to him for several days. Our painting is a remarkable example of this encounter between light and water, where life seems to exist in a silent stillness, imbued with serenity.
