Description
François Bocion (1828-1890), Laying nets for fishing, 1861, oil on canvas, signed and dated, 56x82 cm Certificate of authenticity by M. Reymondin, Geneva, 30 January 2003 Exhibition: Bocion-Chavannes, Société vaudoise des Beaux-Arts, June 1925 Verso: Label from the Bocion-Chavannes exhibition, Société vaudoise des Beaux-Arts, June 1925 François Bocion (1828-1890) - "Laying fishing nets". Painted in 1861, La pose des filets pour la pêche (Laying the nets for fishing) belongs to a moment of full affirmation of François Bocion's art, when the artist imposed his vision of Lake Geneva with rare accuracy, at a time when the Swiss landscape was still largely dominated by painters of alpine grandeur. Bocion distinguished himself by painting in a more intimate and silent way, using the lake as a space for work, light and contemplation. The work is based on a remarkable balance between precision of motif and atmospheric sensitivity. A scene of great simplicity, fishermen busy setting their nets, is transfigured by the evening light, the reflections of the water and the enveloping presence of the mountains. This ability to elevate an everyday subject to the level of a poetic image is one of Bocion's great singularities. Presented in Lausanne in 1925 as part of the Bocion-Chavannes retrospective, the work has long been recognised in Switzerland. At the age of 33, Francois Bocion was fully mature. Here, he has painted a scene with all the ingredients dear to his heart. At the end of the day, just as the sun is starting to turn towards dusk, he takes advantage of the softness of its rays in shimmering colours to highlight the working day of the fishermen of Lake Geneva. The basket carried ashore by one of them shows that the day has been fruitful. He is going to bring the fruits of his labour under the nets. The whole thing is set in a particularly well-chosen location. We are on the edge of the Veveyse, where the mountains of Haute Savoie seem closest, giving the composition that osmosis between the two shores of Lake Geneva. A museum piece worthy of the Leman painter. We would like to thank Mr Reymondin for writing this note.
