Félix Vallotton (1865-1925) - "Rain effect at Tournedos" or "Stud farm Félix Vallotton made a name for himself both with his revolutionary woodcuts and with his pure, often subversive paintings. A member of the Nabis group alongside Bonnard and Vuillard, the "foreign Nabi" gradually broke away to forge his own personal style. After 1900, Vallotton gradually abandoned wood engraving, the medium through which he had gained international recognition, to devote himself almost exclusively to painting. His output between 1910 and 1925 was characterised by a marked shift towards landscapes, often painted in Normandy, particularly around Honfleur and the village of Tournedos-sur-Seine. In these works, Vallotton developed a deeply personal vision of landscape: he synthesised his earlier research by simplifying forms, accentuating chromatic contrasts and creating an atmosphere that was often silent, almost suspended. Here, nature is ordered, simplified by the painter's mind. The silhouettes of the horses are reduced to simple cut-out shapes and the trees to compact, almost abstract volumes. Effet de pluie à Tournedos (Rain Effect at Tournedos) is fully in keeping with this phase, in which the artist favours pure compositions reminiscent of his past as an engraver.
