Description
EGYPT – PTOLEMAIC KINGDOM – PTOLEMY IV PHILOPATOR (221–205). Busts side by side on the right: Serapis, laureate and draped, wearing the headdress of Osiris; and Isis, diademed and draped, surmounted by the horned globe. R/. A standing eagle on the left on a thunderbolt, head turned to the right, wings half-spread with a cornucopia emerging from one shoulder. ΠΤΟΛΕΜΑΙΟΥ ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ // ΔI between the talons. Tetradrachm, Silver. ø28 mm - (13 g). SPL/TTB+. Coin cleaned. It is generally accepted that this type was issued to celebrate the Ptolemies’ victory over the Seleucids at the Battle of Raphia, during the Fourth Syrian War. Official propaganda proclaimed that these two deities, Serapis and Isis, had intervened on behalf of the Egyptians, saving them from defeat (ref: C. Lorber, "The Ptolemaic Era Coinage Revisited", NC 2007, p. 116, and L. Bricault, "Serapis and Isis, Saviours of Ptolemy IV at Raphia").
