Description
A large carved ivory figure of Christ, depicted with a realistic sense of suffering, the sculpting highlighting the muscles, veins and the entire agonising posture of Christ – in his body, with his bent knees, his head with long hair thrown back, his eyes bulging, and his mouth open, revealing his teeth and tongue. His hands, nailed at the fingers, are bent, his feet placed side by side. A knotted perizonium encircles Christ’s lower abdomen. Christ is depicted without a crown, a feature often found in these fine cultural traditions. Ivory finials are attached to the Cross, depicting three chubby-cheeked angels on clouds. Late 17th to early 18th century. Dimensions including the plinth: 79 × 35.8 × 25.7 cm Dimensions of the figure of Christ: 36 × 25.5 × 5.5 cm Damage and woodworm on the blackened wooden plinth.
