Don Quixote
Folio (465 mm x 395 mm) in contemporary sheepskin, with a spine decorated with six raised bands and the gilded coat of arms of President Bouilhet (1673–1746) on the covers, President of the Parliament of Burgundy and a great bibliophile who owned a vast library dispersed in 1784. Minor scuffs and wear to the covers, paper very slightly yellowed and minor flaws.
Set of 23 plates (out of 24) dimensions: 315 mm x 305 mm (inside dimensions) and 465 mm x 380 mm, published under the direction of Charles Antoine Coypel (1694–1752) by Surugue (1686–1762) in Paris. First edition of 1724, prior to the numbered editions.
Engraved series, based on models painted by Coypel for the Manufacture des Gobelins by the following engravers: Surugue, Poilly, Beauvais, Cochin Père, Tardieu, Joullain, Sivestre, Hausard, Ravenet.
Subsequent editions comprise 31 plates. The work was probably originally bound with 23 plates.
