Description
ASCONIUS PEDIANUS (Quintus). [Commentaries on the Orations of M. T. Cicero]. Paris, Pierre Vidoue for Conrad Resch, 1520. Folio, fawn calfskin with blind-stamped decoration, a broad roll with a continuous border of interlaced patterns and ananas motifs, a broad roll of basins decorated with grotesques repeated four times vertically within the central rectangle, spine with five raised bands, smooth edges (contemporary binding). First edition published by the Orléans humanist Nicolas Berauld (1473–1550) of Asconius’s Commentaries on Cicero’s Orations, based on the Venetian first edition of 1477, which it improves upon. It is followed by two further commentaries on Cicero’s orations, by Georges de Trébizonde and by Antonio Loschi. The text is printed in Roman type and embellished with large initials on a perforated background. A copy with wide margins (280 x 205 mm), containing a few marginal notes and underlinings in the hand of the owner on pp. xlv–cxvi and, at the foot of the first folio, the handwritten ex-libris: ‘Ignatij Bracij’. It is preserved in a remarkable cold-stamped binding of the period, produced by a Parisian workshop. The border, decorated with pineapples and interlaced ropes, is signed with the initials I.B. This roulette – reproduced by Denise Gid (AEa1, pl. 38) – appears on at least four bindings held at the Bibliothèque Sainte-Geneviève, three of which cover books printed between 1515 and 1518 (and the fourth an incunabulum). The title page is incomplete. A few minor foxing spots and marginal stains of no consequence; some discreet crazing on the covers; hinges, caps and corners very skilfully restored. Moreau, II, no. 2241 – USTC 181959.
