Description
BIBLIA cum concordantiis veteris et novi testamenti, et sacrorum canonum. Lyon, Jacques Mareschal, 1527. Folio, stiff vellum Bradel binding, smooth spine decorated with double red fillets, red edges (19th-century binding). A superb printing in Gothic type, in two columns, printed by Jacques I Mareschal, known as Roland (1475–1529), containing the text annotated by Alberto Castellano, with historical notes by Johannes de Gradibus, and references to canon law in the margins. The first edition of Mareschal’s Bible was published in 1523. This copy follows the 1525 edition published at the same address.
A very fine woodcut illustration, comprising a title in red and black within a decorated frame adorned with a woodcut depicting Saint Jerome, 120 lovely vignettes framed within the text, and a half-page illustration depicting King Solomon asleep on folio 141, attributed to Guillaume II Le Roy, as well as two full-page illustrations at the beginning of Genesis and the New Testament, numerous engraved initials, and six pages of tables printed in red and black (ff. 229–231).
A copy entirely rubricated in red. A handwritten bookplate from the Ittingen Charterhouse, in the Swiss canton of Thurgau, at the foot of the title page.
From the library of the Baron de Noirmont, with a bookplate bearing a coat of arms.
Marginal repairs to the first eight leaves; wormholes towards the back of the volume; a corner loss on f. 24; a small marginal burn mark on the last four leaves; worn headbands.
Baudrier, XI, 427.
