Description
CICERO. [...] *Rhetoricorum ad C. Herennium*, Book IV. *De inventione*, Book II. *De oratore ad Quintum fratrem*, Book III. *De claris oratoribus...*, Book I. *Orator ad Brutum*, Book I. *Topica ad Trebatium*, Book I. *Oratoriæ partitiones*, Book I. Venice, Aldo Manuzio and Andrea Torresano, March 1514. Small quarto, fawn calfskin, spine with five raised bands, endpapers in attractive marbled paper, marbled edges (18th-century binding). First Aldine edition of Cicero’s rhetorical works. It was reprinted in 1521, 1533 and 1546. The edition is preceded by a lengthy preface by Aldo Manuzio in which he complains to Andrea Navagero about the intruders who constantly disturb him in his work, to the extent that he has had a notice posted on the door of his study to keep them at bay. The volume, carefully printed in italics, is adorned with the Aldine anchor mark on the title page and on the verso of the last leaf. From the library of Father Delaigle, parish priest of Presles-et-Thierny (Aisne), with bookplate. Repairs at the bottom of the first six leaves and the last four; a small marginal water stain at the end of the volume. Minor scuffing to the binding. Renouard, 65:1 – Adams, C-1676 – Murphy, 102 – USTC 822100 – CNCE 12196.
