Description
CORROZET (Gilles) and Claude CHAMPIER. *The Catalogue of Towns, Cities, Rivers and Fountains in the Three Gauls*. S.l.n.n. [Lyon, Denis de Harsy], 1536. In-16, brown calfskin, embossed with cold-pressed bands and a gilt band, fleurons at the corners and in the centre, gilt edges (contemporary binding). An extremely rare edition, expanded to include Claude Champier’s *Rivers and Fountains*.
The USTC lists only one copy in the world, held in Budapest.
The first part describes the founding of forty cities, including Paris, Avignon, Marseille, Rouen, Nice, Angers, Reims, Cologne, Toulouse, Vienne, etc. The second part of the book, presenting the ‘Admirable and Recommendable Fountains’, describes thermal waters and ‘oil-bearing fountains’. The text, composed by Symphorien Champier, is here translated from the Latin by his son Claude. It appears for the first time in this edition.
The work is illustrated with 37 rather naive woodcut vignettes within the text, depicting views of towns, as well as two coats of arms.
F. B1 (folio 1) is missing. Title page soiled, a few marginal tears, minimal foxing. Binding restored, endpapers replaced.
