Description
DAMHOUDERE (Josse de). Judicial Practice in Criminal Cases. Antwerp, Jehan Bellere, 1564. 8vo, hard vellum, smooth spine, speckled edges (original binding). A new edition of this classic work, based on the Latin edition published in Leuven in 1554. It contains the first French version of two important chapters: ‘On Committal, Imprisonment or Banishment to the Galleys’ and ‘The Simulacrum of Worldly Justice’. An interesting woodcut illustration, featuring the full coat of arms of the dedicatee, William, Prince of Orange, and 69 half-page figures within the text illustrating various acts of justice, notably corporal punishment. Four engravings illustrating chapters XC to XCIIII, dealing with ‘On the Permissibility of Adultery’, ‘On Pimps’, ‘On Lechery or Indecency’, ‘On Fornication’ and ‘On Incest’, led to the work being placed on the Index. From the library of Philippe-Louis de Bordes de Fortage (1846–1924), a distinguished bibliophile from Bordeaux, with bookplate. His catalogue describes another copy (1924, I, no. 373). Missing are the final index leaf (cc6), previously rewritten in pen, and the two final blank leaves (cc7–8). Minor worm damage to the first two leaves, slight water stains, and a few foxing spots.
