Description
DESPORTES (Philippe). Early Works. Final edition, revised and expanded. Paris, Mamert Patisson, 1600. In-8, soft ivory vellum, plain spine with title in ink (contemporary binding). The last edition published during the author’s lifetime, ‘very complete, very fine and rightly valued’ (Tchemerzine).
It establishes the definitive corpus of the works of Philippe Desportes (1546–1606), Ronsard’s rival and an ardent French promoter of Italian poets, containing four poems in their first edition, as well as an unpublished sonnet by Ronsard, In honour of Cléonice (f. 152).
This is one of the last works by Mamert Patisson, who drowned the following year. Elegantly printed in italic type, the edition is adorned with pretty typographic headbands featuring foliage motifs and leaf-shaped initials.
A fine copy in contemporary vellum, in rare condition.
From the libraries of Robert and Irène Delmas (1985, I, no. 15), with bookplate, and Pierre Bergé (2017, III, no. 707), with bookplate.
A small, faint stain in the upper margin.
Tchemerzine, II, 890 – Brunet, II, 647 – Picot-Rothschild, I, no. 740 – N. Ducimetière, *Mignonne, allons voir...*, no. 63.
