Description
EUCLID. *Elementorum geometricorum libri xv*. Basel, Johann Herwagen, 1546. Folio, red half-maroquin, decorated spine, plain edges (modern binding). Second Latin edition published by Herwagen, based on that of 1537. It was reprinted again in 1558. The Latin translation is that of Bartolomeo Zamberti – first published in Venice in 1505 – accompanied by commentaries by Theon, Campanus of Novara and Hypsicles, and with a preface by Philip Melanchthon. In addition to the *Elements* of geometry, the edition contains other Euclidean treatises: *The Phenomena*, on spherical geometry; *Catoptrics* (apocryphal), on the reflection of light; *Optics*; and *The Data*, on the application of the theorems of the *Elements*. The text is illustrated with a large number of woodcut diagrams and figures. ‘Herwagen [...] was the first printer to inset Euclid’s diagrams in the text. Earlier printers, and some later ones, placed them in the fore margin’ (Thomas-Stanford, p. 7). The printer’s mark is printed on the title page and on the verso of the last leaf. A few rare early handwritten marginalia. Light water stains on a few leaves; rare small foxing spots. Thomas-Stanford, no. 11 – Steck, III.46 – Wardhaugh, 44 – Riccardi, I, 647 – Adams, E-975.
