Description
EUSEBUS OF CAESAREA. Ευαγγελικής προπαρασκευής βιβ. πεντεκαίδεκα. Evangelicæ preparationis lib. XV. Paris, Robert Estienne, 1544. – Ten Books on the Demonstration of the Gospel. Evangelicæ demonstrationis lib. XV. Ibid., 1545 [1546 in the colophon]. Two works in one folio volume, fawn calfskin, double border of gilt fillets with fleurons at the corners and accolade-shaped metalwork in the centres, spandrels and an oval medallion in the centre, spine decorated with a field of fleurs-de-lis, gilt and chiselled edges (contemporary binding). First edition, in Greek, of these two apologetic works by Eusebius Pamphilus, Bishop of Caesarea in Judea in the early 4th century. A sumptuous Greek print by Robert Estienne produced using the ‘King’s Greek’ typeface, engraved by Claude Garamont based on the handwriting of the Cretan calligrapher Ange Vergèce. Both works are adorned with the basil mark on the title page, and the final leaf of the second work bears the Estienne family’s olive tree mark. This copy is set in an elegant contemporary Parisian binding with chiselled edges. The pattern of fleurs-de-lis was added later to the azure ironwork decoration that originally adorned the spine. From the libraries of James Downe, vicar of St Paul’s in Bedford, with a handwritten ex-dono dated 1841; Annette Elizabeth Tyler, with a bookplate dated 1946; Elizabeth Armstrong, with a bookplate. Hinges, caps and corners restored; minor scuffing to the covers; marginal worm damage at the beginning of the volume. Renouard, 59, no. 12 – Schreiber, no. 78 – Mortimer, no. 220.
