Description
JACQUES DE VORAGINE. Sermones de tempore et de sanctis per totum annum. Venice, Simone da Lovere, published at the expense of Lazzaro de’ Soardi, 31 August 1497. In-4, [12], 123 (of 140) folios. (f. 28 34 a-r8 s4); stiff vellum with overlay, smooth spine, title label, speckled edges (late 19th-century binding). This is the first part alone of this compilation of sermons by Jacques de Voragine, the author of *The Golden Legend*. In its entirety, the edition comprises four parts, published by Lazzaro de’ Soardi of Savigliano between 31 August and 14 November 1497.
A rare Venetian incunabulum printed in Gothic type in two columns, with a large woodcut on the title page depicting the author (who was Archbishop of Genoa) in the pulpit before an audience of clerics.
An incomplete copy comprising 17 leaves (ff. 32–48) and without rubrication. Marginal wormholes on the title page and at the bottom of the first few leaves; a small marginal water stain on the last two quires.
