Description
MOSCHOPOULOS (Manuel). Περὶ σχεδῶν. De ratione examinandæ orationis libellus. From the Bibliotheca regia. Paris, Robert Estienne, 1545. In-4, beige half-maroquin, smooth spine with title in Greek running vertically (modern binding). First edition of this important Byzantine grammatical treatise, printed in Greek by Robert Estienne using the famous ‘Grecs du roi’ typeface, engraved by Claude Garamont based on a model provided by the Cretan calligrapher Ange Vergèce.
The title page is adorned with the basilisk mark, and the text is interspersed with attractive wood-engraved headpieces and initials.
This is the second work published by Robert Estienne as part of his project to publish the principal unpublished Greek manuscripts from the King’s Library, following Eusebius of Caesarea’s *Ecclesiastical History*, published the previous year.
Handwritten bookplate: […] Graf von Zuccato, Lieutenant, dated 1783 on a blank leaf bound at the front of the volume.
The interior is slightly scorched.
