Description
NEGRI (Stefano). A most elegant collection of translations of Greek authors, namely: Philostratus’ *Icones*, Pythagoras’ *Carmen aureum*, Athenaeus’ *Collectanea*, the Tyrians’ philosopher Musonius’ *On the Best Prince*, Isocrates’ *Oration on the Duties of a King*, and many others. Milan, Giovanni Castiglione, 1521. 5 parts in one quarto volume, reused vellum with overlays (modern binding). A rare first edition of this collection by the Hellenist Stefano Negri, dedicated by the author to eminent figures of the time, including Jean Grolier. It contains translations and short works on mythology, philosophy and poetry, including commentaries on Pythagoras’s ‘Golden Verses’, an epistle to the Milanese physician Giovanni Marliani, and five prefaces to the works of Homer, Pindar and Livy.
The volume also includes three important treatises on gastronomic literature in their first editions: *De victo Pythagorico*, *De vino* and *De nimia obsoniorum appetentia*.
A very fine wood-engraved title frame, repeated in the section headings, with engraved initials.
Elegant modern binding made from a page of a manuscript antiphonary.
Copy without the errata. Numerous marginal annotations in the treatise *De nimia obsoniorum appetentia*.
