Description
PRUDENCE. [Poetæ christiani veteres]. Opera of the poet Prudentius. Venice, Aldo Manuzio, January 1501. In-4, hard vellum binding, plain, unmarked spine, gilt and embossed edges (antique binding). An extremely rare post-incunabulum edition published by Aldus the Elder.
The first volume alone (of three) of the *Poetæ christiani veteres*, ‘an infinitely rare and precious collection, of which [...] the few remaining copies are almost all more or less incomplete’ (Renouard). This first volume contains mainly the works of Prudentius, but also the epigrams of Prosper of Aquitaine and a collection of liturgical hymns by John of Damascus, Cosmas of Jerusalem, etc., printed in Greek with the Latin translation opposite.
A bound copy, with fine margins and chiselled edges. Handwritten inscriptions in the margin of the first leaf.
Rebound copy, with scattered water stains and spots, marginal worm damage at the bottom of a few leaves, some quires dislodged, the first leaf crudely reinserted. The final blank leaf kk6 is missing. The Hymns in Greek and Latin have been bound at the beginning of the volume, after the introductory quire.
Renouard, 24:1 – CNCE 36115 – USTC 851458.
