Description
VINCENT DE BEAUVAIS. The First Volume of *Vincent Miroir hystorial*. Newly printed in Paris. Paris, Rue Neuve Notre-Dame [Nicolas Cousteau and Jean Petit], 1531. Folio, in a reused antique half-vellum binding, smooth spine, marbled edges (modern binding). Second edition of Jean de Vignay’s translation. First volume only (of five), comprising the first eight books. The *Speculum historiale*, attributed to the Dominican Vincent de Beauvais (1190?–1264), is a compilation by several authors that draws on episodes from the Bible, the Trojan War, and the history of the Greeks and Romans, and preserves texts by ancient authors—some of which had been lost, according to Guy Bechtel. A two-column Gothic edition printed by Nicolas Cousteau and published in partnership with the booksellers Jean Petit and Jean de La Garde. It follows the incunabulum edition published by Antoine Vérard in 1495–1496, reproducing its woodcuts. The title is printed in red and black within an engraved frame from Jean Petit’s collection. On the reverse, a large woodcut depicts the presentation of the book to the king. A second woodcut, at the incipit, shows the author at his writing desk. Faint water stains, a few foxing spots, title page re-edged, restoration and a small loss on the last leaf. Bechtel, M-415 – Mortimer, no. 545 – Rothschild, II, no. 1999 – Moreau, III, no. 311 – Brunet, V, 1256.
