Description
CANEPARI (Pietro Maria). *De atramentis cujuscunque generis*. Rotterdam, Caspar Fritsch, 1718. Small quarto, mottled calfskin, triple gilt rule, decorated spine, marbled edges (contemporary binding). Third edition of the major treatise on inks (atramenta) by the Italian physician Canepari, his only known work, first published in Venice in 1619, then in London in 1660. ‘The earliest known work which gives details of the formulation of typographic inks’ (Printing and the Mind of Man). The work also deals with pigments and mineral colours, sympathetic inks, etc. Corners and joints slightly rubbed, one cap damaged. Caillet, no. 1991 – PMM, no. 122 – Duveen, 115 – Ferguson, I, 140.
