Description
DESCARTES (René). Discourse on the Method of Rightly Conducting One’s Reason and of Seeking Truth in the Sciences. Plus *Dioptrics*, *Meteors*, *Mechanics* and *Music*, which are essays in this Method. Paris, Charles Angot, 1668. In-4, speckled brown calfskin, decorated spine, speckled edges (contemporary binding). Fourth edition, partly original as it contains the first French edition of the ‘Abrégé de Musique’ and the original edition of the ‘Traité de Mechanique’. The text is illustrated with numerous wood-engraved figures. Guibert classifies this edition (no. 5), published by Bobin and Le Gras, as later than the one published by Charles Angot on the same date (no. 4); however, a comparison of the dates of the printing licence and the ‘printed’ mark on each leads us to reverse this classification. From the library of Pierre-Magdeleine Saguez de Breuvery, a member of the Académie celtique, with an ex-libris. Corners and top edge lightly restored, split joints, signs of wear, a few foxing spots, a small marginal worm-eaten area on the first 150 leaves. Guibert, 18–21 – Diesbach-Soultrait: Bonna, no. 91.
