Description
LEGENDRE (Jean). *Summa juris civilis*, in four books of the *Institutionum imperatoris Justiniani*. Paris, the widow of Claude Thiboust and Pierre Esclassan, 1692. Quarto, red morocco, triple gilt fillet, coat of arms in the centre, spine decorated with a repeated heraldic cockerel, interior lace, gilt edges on marbled paper (contemporary binding). A rare edition of this commentary on the four books of Emperor Justinian I’s Institutes, the foundational part of the Corpus Juris Civilis intended for students of Roman law. It is dedicated to the ‘most illustrious Chancellor of France’ (illustrissimo Galliarum cancellario).
A signed copy in red morocco leather bearing the coat of arms of Chancellor Boucherat, from a highly sought-after provenance.
Louis Boucherat (1616–1699), Count of Compans, Chancellor of France from 1685 to 1699, was tasked with implementing the ordinance revoking the Edict of Nantes. He had previously served as a councillor at the Parliament of Paris, as Intendant of Guyenne, Languedoc, Picardy and Champagne, and subsequently on the Council of State and the Royal Council of Finance. ‘Boucherat loved books and the arts; his library later became part of the Jesuits’ collection,’ writes Olivier.
As is sometimes the case, the cockerel featured in his coat of arms has been embossed in gold on the panels of the book’s spine.
Corners and caps worn, edges cracked, interior slightly browned with a few scattered foxing spots. The copy is missing folio ã1, with no apparent loss of text.
