LONGUS. *The Pastoral Loves of Daphnis and Chloe*. Paris, Debarle, 1796. 8vo, red morocco, triple blind-stamped rule, spine similarly decorated, gilt inner lace, gilt edges (19th-century binding). A charming set of illustrations based on those in the so-called ‘Régent’ edition, comprising a frontispiece after Antoine Coypel and 29 half-sheets based on paintings by Philippe d’Orléans – with the exception of the last, known as the ‘little feet’, which is by Caylus – all engraved on copper by Benoît Audran.
An elegant copy in an unsigned master’s binding.
