Description
[MAROT (Clément) and Théodore de BÈZE]. The Psalms of David, set to French verse by C.M. and T.D.B., with the prose text set out alongside. Sold in Charenton by Antoine Cellier, residing in Paris, 1679. In-12, stiff vellum, triple roll-cut binding, fanfare decoration comprising solid and filigree fleurons, accolade-shaped metalwork and small dotted metalwork, decorated spine, gilt edges, metal clasps (contemporary binding). A rare edition of the Geneva Psalter, not listed in Delaveau & Hillard.
This collection contains the complete Psalms translated into French verse by Marot and Théodore de Bèze, a prose paraphrase and the notated music of the harmonisations; followed by various articles of faith of the French Reformed Churches: the form of ecclesiastical prayers, the catechism, the confession of faith, etc. The volume is adorned with a frontispiece title plate engraved in intaglio.
It was in Charenton-le-Pont that the first Protestant church in Paris was built, due to the ban on Reformed Christians practising their worship within five leagues of the capital.
A very attractive and fresh decorated binding from the Charenton workshop, which exclusively bound books published by the Protestant presses established in the town. Their style is strongly influenced by Dutch bindings of the same period.
