Description
MOLIÈRE. The Works, revised, corrected and expanded. Paris, Denys Thierry, Claude Barbin and Pierre Trabouillet, 1697. 8 volumes in-12, fawn calfskin, decorated spine, interior lace, edges gilt on marbled paper (contemporary binding). A reprint of the most complete collected edition of the 17th century. This edition reproduces, with the exception of a few spelling corrections, the text and illustrations of the first complete and illustrated edition of Molière’s works, published by the same booksellers in 1682. The first six volumes contain the plays printed during the author’s lifetime, and the last two contain his posthumous works, as well as *L’Ombre de Molière* by Brécourt. The illustrations consist of 30 separate engravings by Jean Sauvé after Pierre Brissart, in a second print run. These engravings provide a valuable insight into the staging and costumes of the period. Molière is depicted on several occasions playing various roles. A very fine copy in attractive contemporary bindings. Minor damage to two cap ends. Riffaud, no. 9736 – Guibert, 651 – Lacroix, no. 287.
