Description
[NICODEMUS THE HAGIORITE]. PAUL (Saint). The Fourteenth Epistles of Paul, interpreted in Greek by Makarios Theophylaktos, Archbishop of Bulgaria, and translated into the dialect more commonly used amongst us…. Venice, Nikolaos Glykis of Ioannina, 1819. 3 folio volumes, reused illuminated parchment Bradel binding, plain spine, title label in havana morocco, plain edges (Modern binding). First edition of the Epistles of Saint Paul translated into Modern Greek and accompanied by an extensive commentary by Saint Nicodemus the Hagiorite (1749–1809), of Mount Athos, based on the ancient Greek translation provided by Theophylact of Bulgaria and other exegetes. The work was printed entirely in Greek and published in Venice ten years after Nicodemus’s death; a portrait of him, engraved in intaglio by Giannantonio Zuliani, adorns the frontispiece. Elegant bindings made from a fine antique parchment, calligraphed in brown ink and adorned with large filigree initials in blue and red. Scattered water stains and foxing; traces of pinkish damp at the end of Vol. I and the beginning of Vol. III.
