Description
[PASCHALION]. Πασχάλιον, or Chronicon paschale from the creation of the world to the twentieth year of Emperor Heraclius. Paris, Royal Press, 1688. Large folio, reused vellum Bradel binding, smooth spine, red sheepskin title labels, red edges (modern binding). First edition edited by Charles du Fresne du Cange (1610–1688), featuring a revised Greek text, a new Latin translation, and historical and chronological notes. It is the fourth volume published in the *Corpus historiæ byzantinæ*.
A sumptuous production by the Royal Printing Office, published under the direction of Françoise Loir, widow of Sébastien Mabre-Cramoisy and, as such, director of the Louvre Printing Office from 1687 to 1691.
The Paschal Chronicle – also known as the Chronicum Alexandrinum or Constantinopolitanum, or the Fasti Siculi – is a 7th-century Byzantine chronological compendium compiled by a cleric of Hagia Sophia, covering the period from the Creation of the world to the year 629. Printed in Munich in 1615, it was reprinted in 1860 as part of Migne’s Greek Patrology.
An elegant binding made from a page of an 18th-century manuscript antiphonary, featuring musical notation in red and black and two large painted initials.
A few pinholes and foxing spots; wormholes at the bottom of the final leaves.
