Description
RIZZI-ZANNONI (Giovanni). Historical Atlas of Ancient and Modern France. Paris, published by Le Globe [Louis-Charles Desnos], 1765. In-4, fawn half-calf, decorated spine, red edges (contemporary binding). A very fine historical atlas of France, comprising a double-page frontispiece signed by Le Charpentier and 60 intaglio-engraved maps, including 58 double-page maps and 2 large fold-out maps dated 1767, all adorned with beautiful rococo frames and enhanced with colour. These maps, drawn up by the great Paduan cartographer Giovanni Rizzi-Zannoni (1736–1814), were published by Louis-Charles Desnos ‘to aid in the reading of the History by Messrs Velly and Villaret’. They are preceded by a 16-page Preliminary Discourse. Some copies include a double-page engraved dedication, which is not present in this one. From the library of Pierre Chollet-Beaufort the Elder, of Aigueperse, with bookplate. A lawyer at the bailiwick of Montpensier before the Revolution, Pierre Chollet-Beaufort (1762–1803) served as an administrator and then as a deputy for Puy-de-Dôme in the Council of Five Hundred and the Legislative Body from 1799 to 1802 Missing pages at the top and bottom, split edges, scuffing, a faint halo at the top of the frontispiece, the introductory text and some maps; a few yellowed maps; rare scattered foxing.
