Description
SAINT-RÉAL (César Vichard de). *Dom Carlos*, a historical novella. Paris, Didot l’aîné, 1781. In-18, red morocco, triple gilt fillet, plain spine with decoration, inner lace, gilt edges (contemporary binding). A charming edition published in a run of just 100 copies at the expense of the Count of Artois; this is one of the 60 copies reserved for that prince, whose coat of arms is printed on the title page.
This historical novel, recounting the conflict between the Inquisition and Dom Carlos, eldest son of King Philip II of Aragon, was first published in Amsterdam in 1672 and was banned as offensive to Philip II.
A very fine copy in a fresh contemporary red morocco binding.
