Description
SALNOVE (Robert de). La Vénerie royale. Paris, Antoine de Sommaville, 1655. Quarto, soft vellum (contemporary binding). First edition of the most important French treatise on hunting of the 17th century.
This great classic of hunting literature is a highly comprehensive treatise on the hunting of stag, hare, roe deer, wild boar, wolf and fox, the behaviour and habits of these game animals, and how to rear and care for dogs. It also contains a ‘Denombrement des forêts et grands buissons de France’ (A Survey of the Forests and Large Woodlands of France), a short treatise which, according to Lallemant, demonstrates a profound knowledge of these localities and hunting grounds, as well as an interesting dictionary of hunting terms at the end of the volume, with separate pagination.
Beautiful intaglio-engraved frontispiece.
A copy in its original condition, including the dedicatory epistle to the Duke of Savoy on pp. 168–169.
From the library of Jacques-Gery-Joseph Colpin (1772–1836), a Maastricht city councillor, with bookplate.
Vellum soiled and creased, slight losses, one corner torn, a corner of a loose endpaper missing. Interior discoloured, scattered small water stains, 2 ff. shorter at the top (pp. 219–222), a stain and slight scraping on pp. 222–223.
Thiébaud, 823 – Souhart, 415 – Schwerdt, II, 144 – Jeanson, I, no. 501.
