Description
THEOPHRASTUS. Ἅπαντα. Græce et latine opera omnia. Leiden, Hendrik van Haestens for Jan Orlers, Andries Clouck and Jean Maire, 1613. Folio, Bradel-style cardboard binding decorated with an elegant design of ivy leaves, title and address gilded on the front cover and spine, smooth edges (modern binding). First critical edition of Theophrastus’s works published by Daniel Heinsius.
It presents the original Greek text and its Latin translation in two columns: by Theodore Gaza for *Historia plantarum* and *De causis plantarum* (pp. 1–388), and by Furlanus, Turnèbe and Casaubon for the *Opuscula* (pp. 389–494).
A pupil of Aristotle, the Greek philosopher Theophrastus of Eresos was the first head of the Lyceum, from 322 until his death around 288 BC.
This volume deals primarily with botany, a science of which Theophrastus is considered the founder, defining it as the study of plants for their own sake rather than for their utility. The Opuscula collected in the second part deal with meteorology, physics, zoology, etc.
A copy from the bequest of Hans Georg Herwart von Hohenburg (1553–1622), Chancellor to the Duke of Bavaria, a scholar and man of letters, patron and correspondent of Johannes Kepler and Tycho Brahe, bearing the handwritten bookplate of the Jesuit College of Ingolstadt dated 1656 and the notation ‘ex hereditate Herwartiana’ on the title page. A few old handwritten underlinings and a marginal note on p. 173, probably in Herwart’s own hand.
From the library of the Catholic University of Lille, with a repeated stamp (cancelled).
Minor worm-eaten spots and slight marginal water stains on the first few leaves, with scattered light foxing.
Hoffmann, III, 523 – Graesse, VII, 124 – Wellcome, no. 6269.
