Description
TRISTAN L’HERMITE. *Les Vers héroïques*. Paris, published by the author, J.-B. Loyson and Nicolas Portier, 1648. In-4, soft vellum (contemporary binding). First edition.
*Les Vers héroïques* is one of Tristan L’Hermite’s three main collections of poetry, alongside *Les Amours de Tristan* (1638) and *La Lyre du sieur Tristan* (1641). The author of *Le Page disgracié* has brought together here secular and lyrical poems, composed over a period of nearly twenty years. Only the *Vers maritimes* had previously been published, under the title *Églogue maritime* (Brussels, 1634).
The volume is illustrated with seven copperplate engravings, including an unsigned frontispiece, two portraits engraved by Pierre Daret and four figures outside the text, one of which is after Rubens for *La Peinture de l’infante Isabelle* and one by François Chauveau in *La Maison d’Astrée*.
A fine copy, with generous margins, in contemporary vellum. It is complete with all seven engraved plates—which is rare—and with the 4 ff. quire (marked **) containing five poems omitted from most copies. Early handwritten bookplates by M. Houdemar 1658 (crossed out) and by Dumont.
From the collections of Pierre Duputel, with bookplate, and Pierre Bergé (2015, I, no. 27), with bookplate.
Slight pinholes and marginal discolouration on a few leaves.
