Description
VAN VEEN (Otto) and Marin Le Roy de GOMBERVILLE. *The Moral Theatre of Human Life*, depicted in over one hundred diverse scenes drawn from the poet Horace, and explained in as many moral discourses by Monsieur de Gomberville. With the Table of the philosopher Cebes. Brussels, François Foppens, 1678. Folio, brown calfskin, decorated spine, marbled edges (contemporary binding). Second edition of this very fine book of emblems.
Gomberville’s text is the same as that in his *La Doctrine des mœurs*, published several times from 1646 onwards, to which the publisher has added the superb illustrations from Otto van Veen’s *Emblemata horatiana*. The first edition was published by the same bookseller six years earlier.
A very fine collection of intaglio engravings, comprising a title vignette engraved by Pierre Clouwet after Abraham van Diepenbeke, 103 large, unsigned emblematic vignettes based on compositions by Otto van Veen, his portrait by his daughter Gertruida van Veen, engraved by Paulus Pontius, and a large unsigned fold-out plate in the appendix entitled *Tableau de Cébès, ou l’Image de la vie humaine*.
The top edge is trimmed; a few wormholes in the bottom margin; a short tear, with no loss of material, on the folding plate.
